Legal cover: a lawyer when you need one
Legal cover is insurance that pays for a lawyer. Policies cover matters such as unfair dismissal at the CCMA, divorce and maintenance, criminal defence and bail, civil claims, contracts and leases, debt disputes, and motor accidents. Premiums are flat monthly amounts by tier, from around R100 a month across the market. Matters that started before the policy are excluded. Updated September 2026.
Who it suits
Legal cover suits anyone who could not pay a lawyer's fees from savings, which starts at several thousand rand for even a simple matter. It is bought for the future: policies have a waiting period of three to six months and do not cover a dispute that has already begun. If you need help with a matter right now, say so on the form; some insurers offer an immediate telephone advice line even where the matter itself cannot be covered.
